Bernese Mountain Dog: nature of the gentle giant

The Bernese Mountain Dog is known as a patient, good-natured family dog. The nature of the large Swiss is friendly and people-oriented. Here’s what else you need to know about his character:

In large families, the Bernese Mountain Dog feels very comfortable. His nature is considered to be fond of children, open and very patient – ideal for households with offspring. Where smaller breeds like the Chihuahua are also happy about play sessions, but are simply a bit sensitive due to their small body size, the large herding dog can romp along with full body effort. And that’s what he likes to do.

Characteristics of the Bernese Mountain Dog

The Bernese Mountain Dog is very patient and good-natured. Another characteristic that makes him an ideal family dog is that he can hardly be ruffled by anything. Thanks to his high threshold of irritation, he reacts absolutely calmly to most environmental influences. This also makes him a perfect animal partner when dealing with children.

However, this dog breed has a hunting instinct – but it is not too pronounced. With good training, walks with your new pet should therefore not be a problem. The “gentle giant” can be an obedient dog, provided it has been well trained and is kept and occupied in a manner appropriate to its species. This is of course not only breed-dependent with dogs, but also depends on the nature.

Nature: Reliable, but stubborn

The other side of the coin: As friendly and good-natured as the Bernese Mountain Dog is by his nature – he can also be stubborn. This four-legged dog is namely very self-confident. If he does not feel like doing a task, it takes a lot of persuasion to get him to do it. But again, with enough motivation and consistent training from puppyhood, you should be able to get this trait under control. Positive motivation and consistency are among the means for success.

The most important thing for the four-legged friend with his people-oriented nature is that he is rarely alone. He enjoys being able to be everywhere, which does not mean that he often wants to be the center of attention. Make sure that you always give your Bernese Mountain Dog a good workout, i.e. challenge and encourage him both physically and mentally.
